Monument Square — cover

The competition proposes the transformation of a public square in Palma Campania through a series of spatial interventions inspired by the organisation of the Roman domus. Rather than defining the square through built volumes, the project treats its voids as distinct architectural elements.

An enclosed garden planted with palm trees provides shade, privacy and retreat from the surrounding town. A narrow watercourse extends from the garden into the square, introducing opportunities for play and cooling. Along its axis, a circular bench creates a more intimate place to gather. These elements are arranged within the triangular boundary of the site, leaving the spaces between them open to informal play, movement and encounter. Reinterpreting the hortus, impluvium and atrium of the Roman house, the proposal gives architectural form to a sequence of outdoor rooms, balancing enclosure and openness, contemplation and collective life.
